Captain Billy's 4WD Cape York Wilderness Adventures

safari itinerary

Cape York Peninsula 4WD Safari ToursYour 6 night Cape York Safari Fishing Tour departs and returns to the tropical resort town of Cairns, Australia.

Dedicated to fishing and happy fishermen, each day on your tour we will select 'The Hot Fishing Spots' dependent on the targeted species and what is biting best at that particular time. We will endeavour to show you a new sports fishing destination each day while showcasing as much of our beautiful region as we can! We want you to have the best possible fishing holiday so you will return year after year!

Cape York Peninsula 4WD Safari ToursThe fishing rivers we will enjoy include the Normanby, the Bizant as well as the North and South Kennedy rivers. With these rivers winding and weaving their way right through the National Park and reaching so far inland, means Cape York is protected from netting by professional fisherman, thus protecting this valuable resource and ensuring good fish stocks for future generations of keen anglers that come to Cape York for Barramundi Fishing.

We have permits to fish and camp in several areas of the Cape York Park, therefore, dependent on water levels and fish stocks, we can make an informed decision on which part of the park we will fish at any given time of the year. The parks environment will also expose you to a tremendous range of wildlife, including estuarine crocodiles, and abundance of bird life, and of course, enormous Barramundi!

Along with an abundance of fishing, there will also be ample opportunities to view flora, fauna and the tropical North Queensland's magnificent wildlife, including crocodiles and an abundance of sea birds in their unspoilt natural environment - so make sure you pack your camera and binoculars.

suggested itinerary
Cape York Peninsula 4WD Safari ToursThe following is a guide only and our actual mobile camp movements may vary considerably due to being dependent on prevailing weather and tidal conditions experienced at the time.

day 1
Cairns - Daintree - Lions Den Hotel - Cooktown - Cape Flattlery
An early start on Day 1 will depart from Cairns as we travel through the World Heritage Daintree Rainforest that offers a diverse and beautiful display of scenery and is home to the largest range of plants and animals on earth. The rainforest covers an impressive 1200 square kilometres. Travelling through the Daintree Rainforest we then navigate over the soaring heights of the Bloomfield Track. A stop at The Lion's Den Hotel is a must to admire the collection of memorabilia and of course to have a cold beer to wash down the dust inhaled on the road! After a look around Cooktown we move on to 20km run down the beach arriving at Cape Flattlery where we spend the remainder of the day setting up camp and getting ready for some awesome evening fishing.

day 2
Cape Flattlery Fishing
Cape York Peninsula 4WD Safari ToursIt’s a hard day… fishing the day away for Barramundi, Mangrove Jack, Nanguy, King Salmon, Grunter, etc off Cape Flattlery.

day 3
Cape Melville National Park 4WD
An early morning start sees us off the beaten track to Cape Melville, Princess Charlotte Bay, Bathurst Bay and Bathurst Heads. We travel through the remote Cape Melville National Park access to the park is rough, slow and definitely 4WD only but many say it is worth braving the rough access tracks for the spectacular coastal scenery alone just to get our remote fishing spot. Time permits we will launch the tinnies for evening fishing.

day 4
Princess Charlotte Bay Fishing & Crabbing
After arriving at Princess Charlotte Bay we can enjoy the rest of the day either fishing the estuary river for Barra or catching crab bait and setting crab pots while waiting for the tide to enable a move to the Bizant River.

day 5 / day 6
More Fishing!
Cape York Peninsula 4WD Safari ToursDepending on the weather conditions and the tide, we will endeavour to move to Flinders Islands for some light game fishing and trolling for GT's, Mackerel, Queenfish and other pelagics before a beach BBQ (subject to weather). We may move to a different river system, perhaps the Bizant, Marrett or Normanby for more of above as well as catching crab and trolling.

day 7
Princess Charlotte Bay - Lakefield National Park - Cairns
Departing Princess Charlotte Bay as we head back to Cairns. Our return will take us through Lakefield National Park and Old Lauran Battle Camp Station before ending in Cairns.
